ICOMOS is again issuing a worldwide Heritage Alert, our most consequential expressional of concern, to amplify awareness of the threat to the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) Old Campus and draw urgent attention to the imminent risk of loss of the internationally significant buildings that make up the cultural landscape designed by Louis I. Kahn with his team of Indian architects, landscape architects and engineers.

Following our first alert in January 2021, the dangers facing the IIMA Old Campus in Ahmedabad remain acute.

On 3 November 2022 the Board of Governors announced its intent to “not continue with any further restoration of the faculty blocks, classroom complex, and dorms other than D15”, opting instead for a “reconstruction of the faculty blocks, classroom complex, and the peripheral dorms 16 to 18 with, the same exterior façade, a seismically safe structure, and non-major renovation of the internal space to improve its functionality to suit the needs of the users.”

ICOMOS and DOCOMOMO have therefore again written to the Board of Governors, Director but also the Alumni Chapters and founders of the IIMA Endowment Fund with a call to reconsider this decision and to call upon the support of our organisations to balance the current needs of the campus whilst maintaining this iconic built heritage.
