Giacomo Martinis is a heritage professional specialising in built heritage. Trained and registered as an architect, he holds an M.A. in Architectural History and Theory from University College London (UCL) and a double M.Sc. in Architectural Conservation from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris Val-de-Seine and the University of Venice.
He began his career as a conservation architect in the French built heritage sector, where he handled documentation efforts, as well as projects for the integral restoration and adaptive re-use of listed buildings and sites.
In recent years, he has been notably working on UNESCO’s Culture Conventions, both as part of the Secretariat of the 1972 World Heritage Convention within the Europe and North America Unit, and as an independent consultant on project M&E, thematic studies, and nomination efforts carried out in the framework of the World Heritage Convention.
His academic and professional interests particularly include heritage-making with a focus on 20th-century and colonial history, value-based heritage management, cultural development work, and global studies.
